Why Honolulu Tutoring?
A quick story from our founder, David Aku:
I was born and raised here in Hawaiʻi, and from a young age I saw something that never sat right with me. Many of my friends were bright, capable kids, but they struggled in school simply because they didn’t have access to the extra support or personalized guidance they needed. It wasn’t a lack of effort or ability; they just needed someone to sit with them, explain things in a different way, and believe in them.
Those experiences stayed with me.
Wanting to make a difference in my own community, I enrolled at the University of Hawaiʻi and earned my teaching degree. After graduating, I spent 13 years working as a teacher in the Hawaiʻi Department of Education. I loved my students, I loved the challenge of the classroom, and I loved being part of their growth.
But over time, I saw the same pattern again and again: even the most dedicated teachers can only do so much in a large classroom. Some students simply need more one-on-one attention than the system allows. They need time, patience, and someone focused entirely on their success.
Eventually, I realised that if I truly wanted to help those students – the ones who reminded me of the friends I grew up with – I needed to create something that went beyond the traditional classroom.
That’s why I started Honolulu Tutoring.
My mission was simple: to offer personalised, compassionate, high-quality support to students across Hawaiʻi. To give families a trusted place to turn. And to ensure that no child feels left behind or overlooked.
What began as a small idea has grown into a community of passionate educators who share the same belief I’ve held since I was young: with the right guidance and support, every student in Hawaiʻi can thrive.

The easiest booking process around
Here’s how it works:
You book.
Book online in under 3 minutes or schedule a call with one of our education specialists.
We match.
We work with our team to match the perfect local tutor to your child’s needs.
The magic happens.
We schedule in the first lesson and send you all the details you’ll need by SMS and email.
In the first lesson, your tutor will do an assessment on your child to determine their unique strengths and weaknesses, and build a learning plan to work towards moving forwards. They will send you a copy of the assessment outcomes by email and share some goals that they will be working towards with your child.
We encourage weekly lessons for the best results – but ultimately the length, timing and frequency is up to you.
You are free to communicate openly and directly with your tutor about scheduling and timings. All payments will be through Honolulu Tutoring – details will be provided after the first lesson and only if you are happy to continue.
After every lesson you will receive feedback from your tutor by email, outlining what was covered and how your child responded in the lesson. Every 10 lessons your tutor will provide a detailed progress report, keeping you in the loop at all times!
